The 5 Parts of a Pen Pal Letter

1 October 12, 2026
2 Dear Grandma,
3 How are you? In school this week, we learned how caterpillars turn into butterflies! My teacher read us a funny story about a hungry caterpillar. What was your favorite book when you were in third grade? I hope you are having a wonderful sunny week.
4 Love,
5 Maya
Part 1

The Date

The date tells your pen pal when you wrote the letter. It goes in the top right corner.

Example: October 12, 2026

๐Ÿ’ก Penny's Tip: Writing the date helps your pen pal remember this special day for years to come!

Part 2

The Greeting

This is your friendly hello! It starts with a capital letter and usually ends with a comma.

Examples: "Dear Grandma," or "Hello Uncle Dave,"

๐Ÿ’ก Penny's Tip: "Dear" is the most popular greeting word for letters!

Part 3

The Body

This is the main paragraph of your letter! Share 4 to 5 friendly sentences with your news, a funny story, and questions.

Example: "How are you? We planted sunflower seeds today..."

๐Ÿ’ก Penny's Tip: Always ask at least one question so your pen pal has something fun to answer back!

Part 4

The Closing

A sweet way to say goodbye before you sign your name. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a comma.

Examples: "Love," or "Your friend," or "Warmly,"

๐Ÿ’ก Penny's Tip: Choose "Love," for family and "Your friend," for buddies!

Part 5

The Signature

Sign your first name right under the closing so they know who wrote the letter!

Example: Maya (First name only!)
